My 15-Year Journey as a School Speech Pathologist
Establishing the Department
(2012 - 2026)
I began my journey by creating a comprehensive speech pathology department from kindergarten through year 12, laying the foundation for over a decade of excellence.

As a dual-qualified speech pathologist and primary teacher, I bridged the gap between clinical care and classroom instruction, ensuring every child received holistic support.

15 years of establishing and creating a functioning speech pathology department from kindergarten to year 12 in a school at a private school in the north west of Melbourne.

Whole Class Kinder Social Skills Lessons
Created weekly social skills lessons that prepared children for school by developing confidence, communication, and positive peer relationships. Teachers attended each session to reinforce the strategies and language throughout the kinder day, maximising children's learning and success.

Clinical Supervisor for Speech Pathology University Students
I have had the privilege of supervising university speech pathology students during their school-based clinical placements. I mentored them in assessment, intervention, collaboration with teachers and families, and the unique role of supporting communication across the school environment.

Transitioning to Telehealth during the COVID19 pandemic
During the COVID19 pandemic, I successfully transitioned to delivering speech pathology services via Telehealth, ensuring children and families continued to receive high quality, evidence-based support. Sessions were engaging, personalised, and effective, allowing therapy to continue seamlessly while maintaining strong connections with children and families.

Professional Learning for Educators
I am passionate about empowering educators with the knowledge and practical strategies to support children's communication and learning. Over the years, I have regularly delivered professional learning for teachers and learning assistants in speech, language, social communication and phonological awareness. More recently, I have supported staff in implementing evidence-based practices aligned with the science of reading, helping build confidence in early literacy instruction and student support.

Individual Speech Pathology Intervention
I supported students funded through Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) by advocating for their individual needs and preparing funding applications to secure access to weekly school-based speech pathology services. I delivered evidence-based, individualised therapy tailored to each child's speech, language, and communication goals, working collaboratively with teachers and families to maximise outcomes and participation at school.

Speech Pathology Australia Week
Each year, my colleague and fellow Speech Pathologist, Vanessa Afif, and I developed engaging staff activities to celebrate Speech Pathology Australia Week. These initiatives helped raise awareness of the vital role Speech Pathologists play in schools, advocating for our profession while increasing staff understanding of how speech, language, literacy, and social communication underpin every child's learning, wellbeing, and success.
